“I Came from the Forbidden City, Growing into a Tree on the Island”
I was born from the fusion of the creator’s soul and craftsmanship—lacquerwares, jade, bronze, porcelain; we are artifacts of our time, traces of history. In the Forbidden City, I was placed deep within the emperor’s study. Outside the window, the seasons changed; inside, ink and poetry filled the air. At that time, I thought the world was simply red walls and yellow tiles. But the gears of fate kept turning, the world changed dramatically, dynasties rose and fell, city gates trembled, footsteps faltered. I was carefully wrapped up and left my familiar “home.” Trains, ships, crashing waves… In those turbulent times, the strait was wide, the sound of the water at night like softly recited scriptures. The box was dark, yet my heart felt at peace. For the first time, I realized that the world is in flux. If you ask me what I became after moving from the Forbidden City in Beijing to the National Palace Museum in Taiwan? When the box was opened again, I no longer saw towering palace walls, but the humid air and gentle light of Wufeng, Taiwan. In Taiwan, I no longer belong solely to emperors, but to everyone who gazes upon me. Only through intergenerational exchange and dialogue can a civilization be continuously understood and reinterpreted. Children press their eyes against the glass to look at me, while elders recount endless stories of Chinese artifacts that have traversed millennia, crossed the strait, and taken root in this land. Some say I am ” legitimate,” others say I am “displaced.” But many more see within me a continuous yet branching line. I am not merely a millennia-old artifact being protected, but also a seed. I come from the soil of the Central Plains, yet absorb the nutrients of the island’s land. Time and culture continue to nourish me, and I begin to sprout new branches and leaves.
